“And the days go by, like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own, I begin again…”
~ Stevie Nicks.
September & October 1962.
Patrick hides under a hoodie during his first day of school at Naperville Central. Seeing him two jocks, Dick and “Fester,” tease him as he passes by in the hall but he ignores their comments. Witnessing the scene, the Minister’s daughter, April, feels sympathy for the “new kid.”
Over dinner, April shares with her father about her classmates behavior toward Patrick. While her mother, Anne, chalks it up to “boys being boys,” Reverend Larsen suggests alternative ways to integrate Patrick into the community by inviting him to church or through extracurricular activities.
Later, Dick tells Fester that he’s going to ask April out before basketball season starts while Colleen talks with the Minister about Pat and how hard it’s been adjusting since Ali died. He mentions the upcoming Halloween dance at the church and suggests that it might be a place for him to make new friends.
When Colleen being this up to Pat over dinner, he refuses to go and storms out of the house. After he leaves, Colleen invites Gus to join her for church on Sunday, but Gus remains noncommittal. On the night of the church dance April waits for Patrick to show up, but he’s a no show.
