Kurt makes his final delivery to Mrs. Altmann and learns that her and her husband are moving to the Bavarian Quarter. Mr. Altmann asks Kurt to look up an old friend at Friedrich Wilhelm University once his classes begin. He also mentions that, if all goes well with his studies, Kurt will have a job in his manufacturing firm waiting for him.
On campus, members of the German Student Union organize a book burning. Meeting for lunch, Wilhelm asks Kurt if the Student Union has contacted him about joining, warning Kurt that it will soon be impossible to remain on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Moshe stops in on Gertrud and finds her wearing the uniform of Deutsches Frauenwerk. She coldly informs him that she no longer washes clothes, and warns him to stay away from Kurt.
On the first day of classes, Kurt is appalled by Nazi propaganda openly on display and learns that many professors have already been fired, including Mr. Altmann’s old friend, professor Klingemann. Finally, Oskar proposes to Anna and she accepts.
