“And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black
Tattooed everything…”
~ Pearl Jam.
January – March 1889.
Vincent leaves the hospital and visits with Reverend Salles before returning to the Yellow House. As he surveys the mess left behind from Gauguin’s departure, his cleaning woman stops by and quits. Meanwhile, Gaby has another date with Jacques and begins to appreciate his quiet nature.
Stopping by the post office, Joseph warns Vincent of a petition circulating around town to have banned from the town. Later, Vincent meets Gaby in the Ginoux’s cafe. He apologizes for any trouble he may have caused her while she shares about her upcoming betrothal and implores him to stay away from her. She hands over the pencil sketch he created for her in Paris, but he refuses to take it back. In frustration, Gaby tears it up and curses the day they met, then storms out. Later that night, Vincent gets drunk and has a relapse which lands him back in the hospital.
Back in Brittany, Gauguin makes an earthenware mug of a head with no ears, calling it “drinking men’s thoughts.” Quite pleased with himself, he celebrates his escape from Arles just as Vincent receives news of his eviction from the Yellow House.
