“You gotta cry without weeping,
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice…”
~ U2
July – August 1936.
With the onset of the Spanish Civil War, all anyone can talk about are news reports coming from Spain. Gertrud mobilizes support for Franco’s troops by collecting donations from neighbors, while Wilhelm quits his job at the lumber mill and joins the Condor Legion.
Meanwhile, the mood in Berlin has noticeably shifted as foreign athletes arrive in town in the run-up to the Olympics. Kurt and Moshe refuse to attend the games, but Elisabeth happily goes to the opening ceremony with a fellow nurse and friend from the hospital, Ursula.
Later, Wilhelm lands at Tablada Airfield near Seville as part of the first wave of German “volunteers.” He provides security for the airport and German transport planes fly multiple sorties to bring Franco’s army from Morocco to Spain.
