“In starlit nights, I saw you
So cruelly, you kissed me
Your lips, a magic world
Your sky, all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon…”
~ Echo and the Bunnymen.
April & September 1937.
As refugees from the bombing of Guernica flood into Bilbao, Mara and her two children, Vincente and Mira, feed and care for families as they shelter in and around “Casa de Mara.” And when the Nationalists enter Bilbao assisted by the “Condor Legion,” Wilhelm and his comrades frequent the Cantina. He’s immediately drawn to Mira and his infatuation seems reciprocated, causing Mara to warn her daughter to no avail.
Back in Berlin, Kurt completes his studies and waits for news about acceptance into Graduate School. Meanwhile, Elisabeth and Ursula have become inseparable, spending all of their time together both on and off duty. Kurt, unable to tolerate his mother’s political views and activities, moves in with Moshe and confides to him that he and Elisabeth have grown apart.
Wilhelm says goodbye to Mira as his unit ships out. Later, during the Battle of El Mazucu, he gets severely wounded. Arriving back in Berlin, he’s cared for by Elisabeth.
