“This whipping boy done wrong.
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on…”

April – June 1964.
A delighted Ms. Allen meets April and shares stories about Patrick, revealing details about Ali’s life. Later that night, April confronts her father about withholding information from her about Patrick, leading him to explain the challenge of being both her father and a Pastor in the community.
On the night of the prom, April and Patrick spend the night at his house. While going for a walk, she shares about her younger brother’s death a few years earlier and the guilt that followed. Afterwards, Patrick admits that he doesn’t have any lingering guilt about what happened the night Ali died. Rather, he blames God for her passing and shares how he and Charlie avenged her death. Shocked by his confession, she recoils from him and runs home.
Later, April and Patrick graduate while Liz finishes the nursing program in LA. Gus and Colleen fly to California to be with Liz while Patrick stays with Ms. Allen while they’re away. Meanwhile, a distraught April spends the summer with her Aunt Millie in Anoka, Minnesota.
