“Illusion never changed
Into something real
I’m wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn…”
~ Natalie Imbruglia.
July & August 1964.
During Patrick’s visit with Ms. Allen, she asks about April. Before he can answer, Tamika walks in questions him about his plans for after graduation. Patrick admits that he has no idea and changes the subject to Charlie. Sensing his motives, Tamika cautions him that nothing good will come from joining the military.
Meanwhile, April settles in on the farm and finds the daily routine of caring for animals therapeutic. Feeling comfortable with her favorite aunt, April shares about the challenges of senior year along with her acceptance into Union Theological. Torn between a desire to stay on the farm after the summer or going to NYC, she begs her aunt not to reveal her secret to her parents.
As the summer winds down, Patrick enlists in the Army. And Gus is not happy. April returns to Naperville and learns that Patrick is already in basic training. That night, she tells her parents about Union Theological and worries that it’s too late to enroll in the fall. After several phone calls, Reverend Larsen calls in a favor and secures her place for the upcoming class.
Later, April’s parents help her move into her dorm. Once they’re gone, she writes Patrick a letter.
