“Oh, it’s dangerous
It’s so out of line
To try and turn back time…”
~ Christina Aguilera.
April 1965.
April returns home on Easter break and learns that Patrick is back in town on leave. She makes plans to visit him, but her mother insists it’s best to “let sleeping dogs lie” and move on with her life. Meanwhile, Colleen implores Patrick to “get on with it” before April “gets away.” Before he can reply, April’s phone call interrupts them.
Ms. Allen succumbs to cancer. Her funeral, held at Holy Angels Catholic Church, hosts a standing-room-only crowd with Tamika and Charlie in the front row joined by Patrick and Frank. During the “mercy meal” in the church’s hall, Charlie and Patrick reconnect and share their experiences while Tamika and Colleen exchange concerned glances regarding their boys’ future.
Later, April and Patrick meet up at Oswald’s Pharmacy. April does most of the talking about life in NYC while Patrick listens. When “Vossman” struts in and spots them together, his loud and crude remarks interrupt their meeting. As Patrick gets up to confront him, April grabs his arm and begs him to walk away. As he walks her home, Colleen meets with Mrs. Larsen in her home and apologizes for any difficulties experienced by April because of Patrick’s behavior.
