“Us and them
And after all, we’re only ordinary men
Me and you
God only knows, it’s not what we would choose to do…”
~ Pink Floyd.
October 1942.
Hunkered down in the rubble of Stalingrad, Kurt and Sgt. Otto have become a panzer unit in name only with all of their vehicles either disabled or destroyed. Given orders to take a nearby factory, Kurt leads his men over the open terrain and is shot by a sniper. On his back and bleeding out in the snow, he thinks about Elisabeth and the baby girl he’ll never get a chance to see.
Elisabeth receives news of Kurt’s death at the hospital and leaves her shift early. While grieving with her grandmother Adele, a disillusioned Gertrud visits for the first time to mend the rift between her and Elisabeth. Just as Elisabeth shares the news of Kurt’s passing, air raid sirens sound over their neighborhood and send them scurrying to the basement.
Safely sequestered in the bomb shelter as the thud of exploding bombs shakes the rafters, Gertrud holds her granddaughter for the first time.
