“He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun
But he don’t know what it means…”
~ Nirvana.
June 1890.
Vincent paints Marguerite in the garden. Reluctant to speak for the majority of their session, she enjoys listening to Vincent ramble on as he applies brushstrokes with rapid and confident flourishes. As Vincent packs up, she pauses and whispers to him that her father isn’t “everything that he appears to be.” From a second floor window Marguerite’s brother, Paul, takes notice.
In Brittany, de Haan receives news from his family they refuse to continue their financial support of his folly. He shares the news with Paul, and informs him that they can no longer afford the house in Brittany. A devastated Paul sends a letter to Bernard about his plans for traveling abroad, and sends another letter to Émile Schuffenecker asking if he can stay with him once more since remaining in Brittany has become “untenable.”
While Vincent paints in the fields near Dr. Gachet’s home, Marguerite brings him a glass of lemonade. He questions her about the cryptic message to him from their last meeting, but Marguerite shares about her deceased mother instead.
