“Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all…”
~ Red Hot Chili Peppers.
July & August 1890.
Dr. Gachet shows up at Vincent’s bedside in the Ravoux’s Inn. Awkward and tense, he refuses to treat Vincent’s wounds and tells the Ravoux family that it’s no use helping him since Vincent is likely to attempt suicide again. When a policeman arrives and questions Vincent, he informs the officer that it’s his body and he’s free to do with it what he wishes.
On receiving the tragic news, Theo hurries into town and the two brother speak for an hour in their native language. Vincent doesn’t share the truth of what happened, instead telling Theo not to worry since he’s looking forward to meeting his maker with a light heart. Soon after, Vincent passes away.
Emile and Laval arrive in town to help with the funeral, with Emile handling most of the arrangements. Dr. Gachet helps himself to a handful of Vincent’s paintings as “payment” for service rendered. Rather than argue, a defeated Theo shrugs it off. Gauguin smugly tells anyone within earshot how he saw this all coming as Marguerite seethes in the corner, both for Gauguin’s words and her father’s slight, triumphant smirk.
