Characters & Timelines
Book 1 (Season 1 & 2): The Otherside
1888 Timeline
Paris, Pont-Aven & Arles
Samira (“Rachel”) Santiago
Samira is a gitana from Seville, Spain forced to work in Arles’ red light district after her father’s murder. In her mid twenties, she’s feisty and fearless and has no trouble expressing her thoughts and serves as a rock for her younger sister, Tiena. A gifted psychic, she has premonitions about the future and occasionally consults an oracle deck for guidance. Prior to fleeing to Arles, she was a flamenco dancer in her father’s Cantina.
Tiena Santiago
Only a couple of years younger than Samira, she prefers “taking a back seat” and following her older sister’s lead. More reserved than Samira, she often misses home and occasionally worries what the future might have in store for them. But don’t underestimate her resolve, for she harbors reserves on inner strength when backed into a corner.
Gabrielle (“Gaby”) Berlatier
The word that might best characterize Gabrielle is innocent. At eighteen-years-old, she struggles with a domineering mother who critiques everything she does. Thankfully, her kind and doting father helps to make life at home bearable. Kind, curious and hardworking, it was her chance encounter with Vincent while walking through Luxembourg Gardens that led to his arrival in Arles a handful of weeks later. Forced to work a second job to pay for medical bills, she does her best to remain optimistic about the future while falling for Vincent and hopeful for his attention. When her feeling aren’t reciprocated, she becomes disillusioned by men in general and Vincent in particular, and settles into a comfortable courtship with the butcher’s son.
Collette Berlatier
In her late thirties, Collette is the quintessential frustrated housewife. Unfortunately, she tends to vert her frustration on Gaby. Perpetually worried about what “other people” might think, she’s fiercely protective of the family’s reputation and standing in the community in the hopes that it will land Gabrielle a fitting match.
Henri Berlatier
Gabrielle’s father is in his early forties and is a quiet, kind and compassionate man. Aware of his wife’s stern and unforgiving demeanor, especially toward Gaby, he does his best to make up for her shortcomings. He avoids confrontation unless backed into a corner, and even then would prefer to settle any issues or disputes through discussion and compromise then with direct action. Preferring not one to raise his voice or challenge anyone head-on, he never challenges Collette about her treatment of Gaby.
Vincent van Gogh
To put is simply, Vincent is a passionate person. In his mid-thirties, he can be stubborn and difficult, especially if you disagree with one of his moral tenets. But he’s also kind, caring and compassionate to others, especially those who are less fortunate or overlooked by “respectable” society. He tends to be vocal about his opinions and doesn’t shy away from verbal disagreement while unapologetic ally wearing his heart on his sleeve. What’s more, he can be a bit self-absorbed by his interests and pursuits, and often doesn’t understand the ramifications of his words or actions with respect to the people closest to him.
Theo van Gogh
As Vincent’s younger brother by four years, it has been challenging to be friend and confidant to Vincent – often putting him int he middle of Vincent’s squabbles with their family. As a visionary, his keen eye for art transcends popular tastes and the “ordinary” and particularly values impressionist and post-impressionist works. In fact, he was the one who encouraged Vincent to pursue art full time, seeing the value in what he was doing even before fully committing himself to that path. And through their shared partnership, Theo believes strongly that one day the hard work and sacrifice on both their parts will one day pay off.
Victor Berlatier
Gabrielle’s favorite uncle and Henri’s younger brother, he’s currently unmarried by the time of Gaby’s eighteenth birthday. And because he’s more willing to talk about family issues with Gaby, she finds it very easy to confide in him.
Paul Gauguin
Five years older than Vincent, Paul was a successful stockbroker until the financial crash of 1882. That’s when he decided to turn his hobby into a profession, but the lack of income weighed heavily on his shoulders. After his wife moved into her parents house in Copenhagen, Paul tried to make it work as a salesman, but failed miserably. With her blessing he returned to Paris, but despite his best efforts financial security and widespread notoriety always seemed just out of reach. He believes in his artistic vision and genius and isn’t shy of saying how he’s the best artist of his time, despite what the critics or lack of sales might suggest. What’s more, Paul holds “respectable” society in contempt and leverages friendships and associations with others for how they might benefit him.
Joseph Roulin
In his mid-forties, Joseph is the affable postmaster of Arles who soon befriends his best customer, Vincent.
Marie Jeanne Gloanec
The middle-aged proprietress of the Pension Gloanec in Pont-Aven village, her boarding house serves as the de-facto headquarters of a thriving art community. She takes pride in her establishment’s place in the community, and does her best supporting “starving artists” by accepting works of art in lieu of cash… provided the works are good enough to join the pantheon of works hanging on every conceivable wall. Tough, firm and fair, she’s not afraid to dish out tough love from time to time.
Joseph Ginoux
The middle-aged owner of Café de la Gare and a fixture in the tight-knit community of Arles. She’s Gaby’s boss and becomes friendly with Vincent after he arrives in town and rents a room upstairs. Vincent features the cafe in one of his paintings, and his wife will sit for Vincent and Gauguin after Paul arrives in town. Once Vincent leaves for the asylum they stay on good terms with him, storing his furniture from the “Yellow House” while he’s away in St. Remy.
Albert Carrel
As the proprietor of the Restaurant Carrel, he’s passive-aggressive in his dealings with people and prefers to hide behind his wife’s apron. However, he often quarrels with Vincent over the amount of space which Vincent’s painting supplies take up and badgers Vincent for more rent on a nearly continual basis. After Vincent moves out, Albert takes a number of paintings as payment for back rent, but is forced to return them to Vincent after losing his case in court.
Catherine Carrel
Albert’s strong-willed wife who, to be honest, gets frustrated by her husband’s lack of a direct approach with difficult customers.
Virginie Chabaud
Virginie is the middle-aged owner of several brothels in Arles’ red light district, including House of Tolerance #1 where Samira and Tiena work. Her presence and demeanor can be intimidating, and she knows it and plays it to her advantage though she can be charming and warm when she chooses to be, which is rare. She is a tough but fair boss to Gaby, and underneath the hard and imposing exterior – a necessity for surviving in a “man’s world” after the untimely death of her husband – is a thoughtful and compassionate person. Just be sure not to share her secret with anyone, or you’ll have to face her wrath.
Vano Santiago
The owner of the most popular cantina in Seville, he’s a musician at heart who adores his two daughters. A virtuoso guitar player, each night his patrons enjoy flamenco music while his eldest daughter, Samina, dances.
Anna Cornelia van Gogh
Vincent’s nineteen-year-old sister by the time she visits him in England while Vincent was still working for his Uncle Cent. She is perceptive and headstrong, and not afraid to tell her brother how she sees things. After their father’s death, which she holds Vincent partially responsible for, she argues that he shouldn’t receive a penny of his inheritance and states her case that it’s best for him to leave.
Augustine Roulin
Joseph’s wife and the matriarch of Roulin family. She’s full of energy and loves to entertain at their home, and very much appreciates when Vincent comes to dinner. What’s more, she enjoys a good joke and isn’t afraid to hide her emotions as well.
